Nevermind the Lines raised $1200 for two elementary schools!
In Georgia, art funding in public schools has all but disappeared. Dashboard knows this because our moms and friends work in schools and our nephew goes to school -- we fear he doesn't know the value of a 64-pack of Crayola crayons cause he's never dared dream such a thing could exist. Not good.
Nevermind the Lines will benefit Thomasville Heights Elementary in South Fulton and Lithia Springs Elementary in Douglas County. YAY! Stay tuned for pics when Dash founders visit said schools for big ART SUPPLY DROP OFF!

95 Artists—Open Call for Art
WHY: I-95 is arguably the most important highway in all of America.
This single line carries us to each other and binds us together. It takes us where we’re going, sends us back to where we’re from and it guides our escape.
Like scientists looking through a telescope into outer space, we stare up and down the line and wonder what kind of inspiration lies off the next exit. I-95 binds together countless thriving new arts communities worth exploring.
WHAT: A call for submissions by artists living along I-95 to create a piece that details their section of sprawl. Deadline is June 25. 95 Artists will survey the creative expressions in all media by artists living and working along I-95. It is about the people, place and things discovered alongside a lifeline we know so well.
WHO: are this year’s 95 Artists and what’s their section of the pike like?
WHEN: July 1-Sept 4, 2010. Opening recption July 10, 5-8 p.m.
WHERE: Umbrella Arts, 317 East 9th Street, East Village, NYC
Please consider submitting to 95 Artists so we can bring you together with other members of the many thriving communities along I-95 for one big, exciting summer group show.

Kickstarter Video for Living Walls, The City Speaks
Living Walls, The City Speaks needs more funding. They have posted a video on Kickstarter, a new way to fund creative ideas and ambitious endeavors through raising money from fans of an idea.Kickstarter is powered by all-or-nothing funding method where projects must be fully-funded or no money changes hands. In order for Living Walls to receive any dough at all they need to raise at least $4,000! This money, that I assume you will give after reading this, will go to artist travel, promotional costs, and funding for a poster show/lecture series and gallery show. They are functioning on a skeleton budget, anything you can give is needed and they will be frugal with your generous donation.
If you're interested in continuing to build a sustainable ATL art scene -- prove it. The minimum bid is only 5 bucks. You can do without those new jean print diapers just a bit longer and donate your money to Something, rather than to Ridiculous.

Call For Art !! - Dashboard Show for Living Walls Conference at Mint Gallery June 26th
Dear Creative Types, Art Advocates and Hot Dog Lovers.
The Living Walls Conference is in August as you all know. It has developed from a brain child into a full grown movement. Living Walls has caught the attention of people, publications and collectives across all oceans. Juxtapoz Magazine jumped on board before there was anything in existence but a paragraph about an idea - that might possibly change the face of street art in Atlanta – and planet Earth. Not too far after the French Consulate became involved, offering one of their finest street artists to the grassroots colloquium, however tis still a secret who.
As we all know hot dogs cost money. And if hot dogs cost money – then conferences that change the face of the earth surely do. Living Walls needs your support, emotionally and financially. Multiple fundraisers are being held within the next few months. Donate your work for support of Living Walls, The City Speaks. An art auction will be held on June 26th at Mint Gallery.
This will be good for you in a number of ways. Just by having your art at this auction you add that little line on your resume - that never hurts. The show aligns with a closing of the beltline – temporary art show, which Mint Gallery just so happens to be very close to. Much foot traffic is to be expected. Many of the artists who have already donated are well known and the caliber of the work at the show will be light-years beyond most donated art fundraisers. This will be an art show and a fundraiser! Not just the latter. Take advantage of this.
The Conference will be held at Eyedrum the weekend of August 13th. WE HAVE TWO MONTHS! MAKE IT COUNT! Help your city grow with creative pulses - and for pete’s sake, support your local cooperatives and organizations! In time, these are the movements who will help you as artists become more well known, happier, and less hungry. But you have to help them now.
Thank You and with all our love
Dashboard Co-Op

Yo Art Guy, volunteer your time and get some health care!
Woodhull Hospital in Brooklyn is letting artists pay for their medical bills by donating their skills & time to patients in recovery.
The program called “Artist Access”, was born last year when Dr. Edward Fishkin, Medical Director of Brooklyn’s Woodhull Medical and Mental Health Center, met Laura Colby a former dancer turned performing arts agent.
The Artist Access program allows artists to provide interactive art programs for patients in exchange for health care credits. The credits are deposited in the artist’s personal account, 40 credits for each hour of work which equates to about 40$ an hour and can be used to cover sliding scale fees in Woodhull’s HHC Options program. Proposals have to be submitted for review and accepted with priority given to those that match the needs of departments such as the Pediatric, Geriatric, or Rehabilitation Units.
Something to think about in ATL. Hey Grady...you've got some time on your hands, right? Let's talk.

Call for Artists - Apply for Ga Artists Registry - Deadline May 10th
Registry Artists will have access to many helpful resources including:
-commission and acquisition opportunities in the local, national and international realms
-professional development workshops
-arts lectures
-mentorships for emerging artists
Since 1995, 48 artists have been awarded commissions to create artwork for many Fulton County facilities. The selection process consists of three separate meetings held by the Fulton County Arts Council Director and is pretty extensive.
Here are some things to think about when submitting work:
1. The work will be rated initially on a scale system. Yikes. The best way to deal with this scary reality is to hit them with your best shot. These are the things they will be rating work on via their release:
Artistic Quality
-Work samples
-Adequate experience in the production of public art
-Evidence of ability to work within budget
Design
-Aesthetic compatibility with the architecture
-An appropriate medium, given the function and use of the site
Permanence
-Use of durable materials
-Good construction techniques
Secondary Criteria includes the acquisition of a variety of artwork appropriate to a public collection:
-Artwork in different mediums and styles and breadth of themes or subjects
-Artwork which recognizes and fosters diverse social, cultural and historical values
-Artwork which is memorable, thought-provoking and enduring
-Additional criteria identified by the site will be considered, such as the potential of an artist to address theme or subject relative to the project, compatibility with existing project materials, etc.
2. The review process will go through many sects before you're responded to:
Community Review Panel
Public Art Committee Proxy
Fulton County Arts Council Director
Cross Departmental Contract Routing
Fulton County Board of Commissioners
3. Breath, the worst that could happen is they say no. That happens to me every day -- twice already and its only 5 p.m. Can I pet the otters they are really cute? No, that's a felony. Georgia Power: Can you by chance wave that $35 connection fee? No, we hate you. Excuse me, Mr. Jiffy Lube, are there any specials today? Yes, it's Lady's Day. $5 off and this here rebate for a free quart of oil. Sweet.
To apply:
Send 10 to 15 jpg images of your work on a CD and THIS application to:
Fulton County Art Council
ATTN: Public Art Registry
141 Pryor St. SW Suite 2030
Atlanta, Ga. 30303
Hand it to your post office attendant, spit in your hand and give them a high five. This ensures good luck.

Last minute cash from Foundation for Contemporary Arts
Emergency Grants are available by application to artists working in all disciplines who have sudden opportunities or unexpected expenses associated with presenting work to the public.
The grants are intended to support the creation of innovative and experimental work, and are meant to assist individuals and groups when there is insufficient time to seek other sources of funding. Requests are primarily granted to artists who are "emerging" and have few sources of financial support. Emergency Grants is the only active, multi-disciplinary program that offers immediate assistance of this kind to artists working anywhere in the United States.
This is a highly competitive grants program, so if you apply you need to make sure paperwork is in order. They are a small organization and have no time for silliness or bozos. You know who you are. Learn more.

Ford foundation pledges $100 million to the arts
NEW YORK, 5 April 2010—With funding for arts and cultural institutions under intense downward pressure nationally, the Ford Foundation today announced a 10-year, $100 million initiative to support a new generation of arts spaces. The Ford initiative is an investment in the creative energy of America, to help artists and arts organizations develop vibrant cultural spaces even in times of economic hardship.
The Ford grants will be awarded to projects that incubate and produce creative work across all disciplines.
The $100 million commitment comes at a time when funding for the arts has been severely curtailed by the financial downturn and acknowledges the potential of a strong cultural sector to help drive economic revitalization in hard-hit neighborhoods. The initiative, Supporting Diverse Arts Spaces, will provide grant funds to support both new projects and the revitalization and expansion of existing arts spaces.

Living Walls, The City Speaks Conference
I have been waiting for you to pay attention to me for a while and, quite frankly, almost gave up. No one told me, but I've heard kids talking in dark allies late at night that they are plotting something. Something BIG. REAL BIG. I think they want to dress me up, I hope its out of paper and paint - I always feel so pretty when they do that to me! Charlotte, NY and Chicago won't have shit on me when I'm covered in color and shapes and shadows! Somebody out there fell into some electrical cords; the spotlight is now turned on me. Thank you for being so clumsy.
Its all happening here: "Living Walls, The City Speaks” and I hope all of you will participate, Juxtapoz Magazine is watching, after all!
Love Always,
Atlanta, Georgia

Dashboard hunts for WonderRoot’s BeltLine art
Yesterday morn we received word that our WonderRoot peeps had placed some 200 pieces of guerrilla art throughout our fair city. At that, a group of adventurers and I set out at sunrise to find said art and document it. A mass of texts flew back and forth as folks spotted painted posts next to rail tracks and bridges. (These are the moments that I am grateful for technology and dismiss the first Terminator movie as a foretelling of our future.)
The scavenger hunt made me not only aware of the convenience of the BeltLine, but also that creativity hides in the underbelly of these seemingly dilapidated locations. WonderRoot's project, for me, was less an installation of beautifully crafted art, and more a discovery of the environment surrounding the colored panels -- awareness of space, ya’ know?
We drove along the BeltLine from Grant Park to East Midtown hitting each intersection until curiosity got the best of us and we parked behind that weird doggy daycare next to Murder Kroger. We walked along the BeltLine to Paris on Ponce discovering graffiti splayed alongside the best views of the city.
Enough people won't see this work or the fruits of WonderRoot's labor unless they force themselves to get out and interact with public art. For me and my crew however, we were touched. Thank you, WonderRoot!

Sculptor opportunity!
There is a wonderfully bizarre event being planned in Atlanta involving the release of several artifacts of Michael Jackson's collection by Lynda Parrish. The event coordinators need a piece of sculpture on which to display the pieces. That's where you come in! Unfortunately, there's very little preliminary money to be made, but Annie Bradley of Experts of Social Media says there will be local and national coverage of the event and that the subsequent national tour will create hype across the country. If you're interested in the event and want to find out more information contact:

Submit art for the Beltline!
The BeltLine is presenting a new public art initiative. In spring 2010, Atlanta BeltLine, Inc. plans to open nearly eight miles of the future BeltLine corridor to pedestrians and bicyclists via an interim trail. A kick-off arts event staged from late spring through summer will celebrate the reawakening of the old rail corridor as Atlanta’s new public realm. Visual arts, performing arts and historic site interpretation will direct the public’s attention to this amazing resource that encircles downtown Atlanta, thus increasing the level of awareness and fostering a sense of ownership to ensure that the BeltLine becomes a truly public amenity.
Visual and performing artists are invited to submit proposals for temporary works of visual and performing art to be a part of this May through October event. Potential projects should reflect the historic, environmental, cultural, functional, urban design, and/or aesthetic parameters of the sites and should be well-researched, well-planned and feasible.
Potential art projects may be designed for site-specific installation, but this is not a requirement. Contemporary and interdisciplinary approaches, innovative uses (or re-uses) of materials and new technologies are encouraged. Applicants are asked to consider ways in which some level of community involvement might be facilitated in the creation or ongoing interaction of the projects.
Learn more about the Beltline.
